We started Olivenhain Coffee Roasters because we love great coffee and wanted to share it with our neighbors. But as we researched the specialty coffee market, we were struck by something: really good coffee has gotten expensive — and it's almost never truly fresh when it reaches your cup.
We thought we could do better on both fronts. Not by cutting corners on quality, but by eliminating the overhead that doesn't actually make your coffee taste better — and by putting it in your hands while it's still at its absolute peak.
The Freshness Advantage
This is the part that matters most, and it's something no amount of money can buy from a distant roaster.
Roasted coffee is at its best within about two to four weeks of the roast date. The aromatic compounds that make coffee smell and taste vibrant are volatile — they dissipate over time, especially once the bag is opened. By six to eight weeks post-roast, even high-quality beans taste noticeably flat.
Olivenhain Coffee (local delivery or pickup): Roasted Sunday, in your hands Sunday. You're drinking it at peak freshness from day one.
Specialty roasters ordered online: Roasted to order, then shipped 2–5 days to your door. By the time you finish the bag, you're 3–4 weeks post-roast — the tail end of the freshness window.
Grocery store coffee: Most bags were roasted 2–6 months before reaching the shelf. Many don't even print a roast date. If the bag only has a "best by" date a year out, the coffee is almost certainly past its peak before you buy it.
When you pick up coffee from our roastery or receive a home delivery in Windsor Estates, you're getting beans that were roasted that same week — often that same day. There's no shipping delay, no warehouse time, no weeks sitting on a shelf. That's a quality difference you can taste in every cup.
Even when we ship within California, your coffee arrives within days of roasting — still far fresher than most alternatives.
How Our Prices Compare

But What About Grocery Store Coffee?
Most of our neighbors tell us they currently buy brands like Peet's, Stumptown, or Counter Culture from the grocery store shelf — typically spending $13–$19 per 12-ounce bag. At first glance, that looks cheaper than ordering from any specialty roaster online.
But here's the catch: that grocery store bag was roasted weeks or months ago. It sat in a warehouse, then on a truck, then on a shelf. By the time you buy it, it's already well past peak freshness. You're paying less, but you're also getting a shadow of what that coffee tasted like when it was fresh.
Our coffee is priced right in that same range — $16 to $20 per bag — but it's days old, not months. You're getting genuinely fresh, specialty-grade coffee at grocery store prices. That's the real value of buying from your neighbors.
Same Quality, Less Overhead
We have tremendous respect for roasters like Onyx, Stumptown, Counter Culture, and Intelligentsia. They produce outstanding coffee, and their commitment to sourcing and quality has helped elevate the entire specialty coffee industry. Their prices reflect the real costs of running roasting facilities, storefronts, employee teams, and nationwide shipping operations.
Our model is simply different. We roast at home in small batches. Our marketing is this blog and word of mouth. For our neighbors in Windsor Estates, we deliver by hand — zero shipping charges. For local pickup at our roastery, same thing. That lets us offer the same quality of coffee, sourced from the same caliber of specialty importers, at a significantly lower price with unbeatable freshness.
We also ship within California for customers who aren't close enough to pick up, and even with a shipping fee, our delivered prices are competitive with — or lower than — most specialty roasters.
"Dad showed us how much coffee costs at other places and Graham said, 'That's crazy!' I think our price is really fair and you get it way faster." — William, age 8
Note: Competitor prices were checked in March 2026 and may have changed since publication. Shipping costs reflect standard/economy shipping for a single-bag order to Southern California. Many roasters offer free shipping on larger orders (typically $30–$40+), which would reduce the per-bag delivered cost for multi-bag purchases.
